Halfway between La Mancha and the Mediterranean Coast, directly north of Jumilla, lies this relatively unknown wine region that's churning out some truly noteworthy wines. The majority of wine production here goes into reds, with the most emphasis placed on Monastrell, Cencibel (aka Tempranillo) and Garnacha Tintorera (aka Alicante Bouschet). Quite strangely, this little pocket of Spain has become the new home of one of the least-loved Bordeaux varietals, Petit Verdot, and the resulting wines have enjoyed great success.
