The state of Western Australia has a uniquely moderate maritime climate. With fairly consistent year-round temperatures and moderate rainfall, the climate is well suited to the Bordeaux grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The soil here tends to be gravelly or gritty loam, offering excellent drainage, though poor water retention means that frequent irrigation may be required. The Shiraz form Margaret River faithfully reflects its microclimate, yielding medium-bodied, spicy, peppery wines with less obvious fruit and huge structures relative to their size.
