The world of mezcal resembles an eccentric, but faded country estate: every door unlocks something unexpected. So if you’re intrepid enough to turn the nob of a small door that’s hidden in plain sight, you’ll be rewarded with a mind-expanding experience in the form of Cuish Mezcal. Cuish (‘agave’ in Zapotec) was founded in 2009 in the heart of Oaxaca City by Felix Hernandez Monterrosais on the same location where his parents once ran a small mezcal shop. Monterrosa has spent the last 16 years exposing drinkers to traditional, rural mezcals by bottling spirits made by relatively unknown (for now) masters from across Oaxaca. Astor's Select Bicuishe Mezcal represents the pinnacle of artisanal production: aromas of lime and mulberry give way to a palate with notes of chamomile, kumquat, and toasted coconut.
