Müller-Catoir

Pfalz, Germany

Pfalz, Germany Lying at the foot of the Haardt hills with views across the Rhine plains, is Weingut Muller-Catoir. This historic estate can trace its history back to 1744. Nine generations have tended the 20 hectares of primarily Riesling vines now run by Jakob Heinrich Catoir and his son Phillip. Top appellations include Haardter Bürgergarten, Herzog, Gimmeldinger Mandelgarten and Mussbacher Eselshaut. There have been some recent changes with Martin Franzen from Baden Baden's Nägelsförst estate taking over winemaking duties and so we'll no doubt see even further refinements to Muller-Catoir's dizzying array of wines. Franzen favours extended lees-contact, ultra-reductive - clean no oxygen vinification and ultra-dry wines. Germans now prefer a style called 'modern-Trocken' wines (usually 9grams / liter residual sugar); these are not and never will be his style.
