Riverland, Australia Over 1,000 acres of vines makes up the Paringa Vineyard located in South Australia’s “fruit bowl country” - The Riverland. Paringa Vineyard is a 3 hour drive the states capital, Adelaide. The vineyard abuts Australia’s longest river, The Murray River, and has excellent well draining sandy loam topsoil sitting atop ancient limestone. Rainfall here is very low (sometimes 1 or 2 inches per year) but Paringa has a constant and reliable source of water for its computer control drip irrigation system from The Murray River. The word Paringa is the anglicised indigenous term for “bodies of water”. Paringa is owned by the Hickinbotham family whose association with the Australian wine industry goes back over 74 years when in 1936, David Hickinbotham’s grandfather, Alan Robb Hickinbotham co-founded Australia’s first Oenology Course at Roseworthy, South Australia. Chief Winemaker / Viticulturist - John Gledhill holds double degrees in Viticulture and Winemaking. John’s family are fourth generation Wentworth growers, one and half hours drive upstream from Paringa. John has been immersed in the area’s climate and views winemaking as being ‘made in the vineyard’. John works with consultant winemaker, Kym Teusner, a rising star on the Australian wine scene. The third member of the team is Vineyard Manager, Roy Stevens, who has worked with the Hickinbotham family for over 22 years. “Quality and Quantity” is Paringa’s philosophy and to achieve this, canopies are managed by measured water application and yields kept low to ensure consumer’s always enjoy high quality, good value wine.
