Staff Pick Notes

The revival of this esteemed estate began in 1969 with Arnaldo and Marta Galli purchasing an abandoned piece of land in the Negrar di Valpolicella, a historic comune just northwest of Verona. When Arnaldo & Marta discovered this land, they noted the altitude of the vines (300m above sea level) was well above their valley neighbors. This elevation, coupled with the mineral rich tufa, a rare type of limestone, caught their attention immediately. Over the years, Marta acquired fame for her winemaking and became known as ‘La Signora del Vino’. Today, their two sons Marco and Paolo continue to run this family estate, with this Ripasso being the sweet spot for my palate and budget. Curiously, in May 2020, a neighboring vineyard discovered a nearly perfectly preserved Roman mosaic floor dating to the 3rd century AD. Truly historical terroir!

Glossary

Corvina

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

Veneto

Valpolicella

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
