Staff Pick Notes

Massaya winery builds upon the legacy of the Phoenicians, who planted vines some 5,000 years ago around the Mediterranean basin. Although Lebanon is no longer known for wine production, that wasn't always the case. The Beqaa Valley, where this winery is located, is home to a temple for Bacchus, the God of grapes and wine. No other temple to Bacchus exists anywhere else in the world. Despite continuous political strife and threats to their own well-being, brothers Sami and Ramzi Ghosn continue to make delicious wines that honor the land and their cultural heritage. The pair strive to “bring a message of peace and civility to the world through quality winemaking.” I have no doubt you'll make new friends, maybe even some friends you wouldn't expect to make, if you bring this crisp, pale rose to your next barbecue or block party.

Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
