Staff Pick Notes

The Dunites were a group of eclectic individuals who settled in the beach dunes of San Luis Obispo between the Great Depression and WWII, living off the grid before there really was a grid. Their spirit inspired husband and wife duo Rachel and Tyler Eck to name their winery after them. I was immediately intrigued by the ‘Sans Soufre’ (‘without Sulfur’, usually added in small amounts to help preserve a wine) and took one home the same day the wine arrived at Astor. A lithe, slinky, and incredibly refreshing expression of Syrah with aromas of violets, sage, cracked pepper, strawberry cola, and lovely blue fruit. It's plush and juicy with focused acidity that can make another sip irresistible, however, if you can take your time with this one, it rewards heavily with nuance and definition, with or without food. And who needs sulfur anyway.

Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
