Staff Pick Notes

85% Montepulciano, 10% Aglianico, 5% Tintilia Picture it – sitting on the patio, looking out over the olive trees and the stable of donkeys, playing a game of “Passatella” (the 17th century card game), and sipping a glass of deep rosato that reminds you of an herbal hibiscus tea. There’s something different about this wine. It has a pastoral, sun-baked quality about it that may have you tilt your head for a moment..but then you won’t be able to resist going back for another taste. Giulio and Margarita Steiger moved to Molise (Giuilo’s birthplace) from Paris in 2014. Their goal being to start their family within nature in a fairly untouched land. They landed on Contrada Olivoli, in the countryside of Casacalenda. They began planting in 2016, and their winery’s namesake comes from the old name for Casacalenda, “Kalena.”

Montepulciano d'Abruzzi is produced in the region of Abruzzi from the Montepulciano grape, and is not to be confused with Tuscany’s Sangiovese-based Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Many of the modern incarnations of Abruzzi’s favorite red wine are bigger, more structured,...
