I invite you to step outside your Châteauneuf-du-Pape comfort zone for a moment and take a trip 20 km northeast to the venerable appellation of Vacqueyras. While it may not share the same level of reverence or recognition as Chateauneuf, Vacqueyras is one of the top crus of the Southern Rhône and produces bold, voluptuous red wines that deserve your love and affection. Domaine le Sang des Cailloux ("the blood of stones", pretty badass), makes a wonderful Grenache-based blend with some Mourvèdre and a solid helping of Syrah to add some tannin, acidity, and rich black fruit. This unfined, unfiltered, hand-harvested gem of a wine brings ripe blackberries and plums to the party with leathery, earthy, rustic undertones. Serve this up at your next barbecue and smile.

Mourvèdre

Known as Mataro in California and Monastrell in Spain, Mourvèdre can produce bold, tannic, highly alcoholic red wines. They usually show no shortage of fruit as well, and the best examples keep it all in perfect balance.
