Staff Pick Notes

Adelaide had a population of just six thousand people when John Harvey arrived in 1839 and became the second person to plant grapevines there. Six generations later, the Harvey family continue their winemaking heritage in McLaren vale with Chalk Hill Wines. Their Alpha Crucis label is reserved for only their best cuvees. This wine is a rich, concentrated, complex, yet surprisingly lithe and effortlessly refreshing Cabernet Sauvignon with wonderful flavors of dark berry fruits combined with spice, dark chocolate and a hint of coffee. Produced from multiple Chalk Hill vineyards from fifty year old vines, this wine spends fifteen months in french oak, 15% percent of it new. Alpha Crucis is the brightest star in the Southern Cross Constellation and has played an important role in the lives of generations of navigators, dreamers and thinkers.

With a microclimate heavily influenced by its proximity to the ocean and varied soils rich in iron or limestone, McLaren Vale Shiraz tends to exhibit more savory notes on the nose, adding olives and spice notes to its dark berry fruits (which take on...

Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. It is the principal grape of Bordeaux, and as such has rightly earned its place among the greatest and most long-lived wines of the Old World; of course, it is also the most heralded grape of California, positioning it at the forefront of the New World wine scene as well. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
