Florèz "Picard" Merlot - 2021

Item # 48112 750mL

A unique Merlot that is full of life with aromas of red and dark-berried fruit on the palate. The fruit is more restrained than what you may think as typical. Full of character and vibrant. The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed and fermented with native yeasts. Aged for 10 months in neutral French oak casks and bottled unfiltered. No sulphur added. The vines are located in redwoods 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean lending a cool climate influence.

Staff Pick Notes

I was so impressed with the other Florèz wines we’ve carried that I was stoked when this Merlot (cheekily contained in a burgundy-style bottle) appeared. I took one home immediately. Wow, this is not your Dad’s Merlot! A big, bright, ruby laser kiss of lively cranberry and raspberry notes explode together with dusty tannins and an exhilarating acidity that woke me right up on a Sunday afternoon (when I was loaded down by a long brunch). I’m writing this in March but can’t wait for warmer weather to have this with a chill on it and some grilled fare. In winemaker James Jelk’s own words “By utilizing traditional, artisanal, and elemental practices we create one-of-a-kind wines for those who take interest. Always in pursuit of improvement we hope to deliver wines of pleasure and ease on the body.” Thanks, James! Keep ‘em coming!

It has one of the most impressive and distinctive textures of any wine, and has long been prized for the "softening" effect it can have on Cabernet Sauvignon - especially...

Its presence (or absence) is what determines the style of a given Sherry. When it does grow, it protects the wine from oxidation while feasting on the available glycerin - the resultant Sherries are thus dry and very pale in color (called Finos or Manzanillas). Sometimes the layer forms early on, but then falls into the wine and disintegrates - these Sherries thus...
