Half-Bottle of Campbell's Rutherglen Topaque - NV

Item # 25735 375mL

From an Australian family with over 140 years in Australian winemaking, this fine sticky wine is full of luscious flavors of butterscotch toffee, aromas of tea leaves, and orange peel acidity. The ever-evolving palate shows multiple personalities as it opens, revealing complex notes of honeycomb and gently-singed brown sugar. Serve with vanilla ice cream, fruity desserts, or soft cheeses. You might also lightly chill this and serve it as an apéritif, or as an after-dinner drink with coffee. This is late-harvest Muscadelle, left on the vine to ripen until it is raisinated and laden with natural sugar. The resulting wine is then blended with wines from previous vintages to produce a consistent style, meaning that this contains wines from a number of vintages over several years.

Staff Pick Notes

I can't begin to explain to you my love for dessert wine. Sometimes after a large meal, an edible dessert is just overkill, the final straw between a happy stomach and a pack of antacid. The Campbell's Rutherglen Topaque NV can satiate those sweet cravings. Muscadelle grapes are left on the vine to raisinate after which, this Australian "Sticky" is blended with different vintages to provide consistency. Full of butterscotch, brown sugar, and bergamot-marmalade notes, this wine is luscious and full-bodied on the palate with a warming finish. If you still have that dessert craving, pairing this with Sticky Toffee Pudding and a large dollop of vanilla ice cream is divine. Or forget the pudding and add a light drizzle directly on top of your vanilla ice cream to amplify your week night dessert course.

Pairing Advice

Apple Ginger Pie with Cinnamon Here's why it works: A dessert wine can be a perfect counterpoint to a fruit-based dessert. It should be sweet, but not too sweet, with assertive aromatics to stand up to the ginger and cinnamon.

Glossary

Australia

Australian Shiraz (made from the grape called “Syrah” in other parts of the world) shows the essence of the outback: it’s big, bold, and a little rough around the edges. The vast country leaves lots of room for variation, however, with its many terroirs each yielding distinctively styled wines. The climate of South Australia’s McLaren Vale district is heavily influenced by the ocean; wines here typically show savory notes of olive and spice on the nose and deep berry flavors on the palate....

Victoria

The state of Victoria, adjacent to and southeast of South Australia, is Australia’s third-largest producer of wine. Climatically very varied (its higher-altitude vineyards are the coolest in Australia), Victoria is home to the most diverse assortment of vineyards in Australia, with a particular focus on cooler-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Shiraz production tends to be concentrated in the central viticultural regions of Grampians, Pyrenees, and Heathcote, where the...
