The Savino family owns a sliver of an estate that is located within the natural reserve park, Vendicari, located in the southeastern-most corner of Sicily. This is one of the few Nero d'Avola vineyards facing directly onto the sea shore in the area of Sichilli. The fruit aromas are savory with mulberry, orange rind, and spice. Aged in old barrels and bottled unfiltered. A full-bodied red wine that will age for several years to come.
This wine perfectly straddles the line between Old and New World, balancing ripe, dark fruit, savory minerals, and bright acid, courtesy of its elevated location on the volcanic terroir of Sicily. Nero d'Avola can be a chameleon grape, but this wine is something of an outlier, as the grape normally turns out more streamlined and sturdy wines compared to the nimble weight and power that Fenicotteri shows us here. It will age well for another 5 or more years, but I say drink it now. It's so alive and vibrant that a good decanting is all it needs. This wine screams for cured or dark meat and hard cheese.
