Vinca Minor, Carignan - 2019

Item # 31948 750mL

An excellent, robust red wine made from Carignan. From older vines, you'll find dense extract, a good dose of tannins and dark fruit aromas. Jason Charles spent time after College working as a photographer in the US, Mexico, and Europe. He caught the wine bug waiting tables in New York City restaurants. After experiences working in vineyards in Saint Emilion in Bordeaux and the Sonoma Coast, Jason started the Vinca Minor label to “explore the intersection between farmer, winemaker and artist.” Jason makes his wines with as little intervention as possible.

Staff Pick Notes

Did you know that Vinca Minor is the name of a flowering plant species? My childhood home was camouflaged in these quick, thin deeply green climbing vines, the trees, our fences, & if you stood still long enough they would even climb your legs (kidding). Through the Spring & Summer purple petals bloomed like pin wheels, geometric, changing like a kaleidoscope within their brief, brilliant life span. Vinca Minor the species shares it's name with one of the brilliant natural wineries in Mendocino, California run by Jason & Emily Charles. Their wines are elegant & alluring but my favorite of all is this Carignan. Medium body full of earthy raspberries, herbs and crunchy minerals. The perfect pair with snappy fennel sausages and sage butter gnocchi, or whatever you can find in your refrigerator, I bet it will be great with that too!

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Carignan

Grown all over Europe and the Americas, Carignan (a.k.a. Carignane, Carignano, and Cariñena) is seldom seen as a 100% varietal wine. Many appellations of Languedoc-Roussillon must include a certain percentage of Carignan, but it is rarely the dominant grape in these blends. For years, this naturally high-yielding grape suffered from overproduction, but New World winemakers have lately taken up the Carignan cause and produced some distinctive and delicious examples. Now that it is subject to...
