Tasting Notes

Ripasso Valpolicella is made specifically with the pressed skins of the venerable Amarone wine from the region. This method adds a richness that is incomparable compared to a regular bottle of Valpolicella. Look for Ripasso if you want extra body and complexity in your red wines.

Staff Pick Notes

What's not to like about a hearty Amarone? Oh, that's right...the price. If you are looking for something similar, however, consider a Valpolicella, which is made from the same grapes in the same region as Amarone. Unlike its big brother, it's made in a lighter fresher style. The exception are those labled Ripasso, which are made by running the Valpolicella over the skins and lees of the just-made Amarone grapes. This method imparts additional texture, body, and flavor to the wine, which in turn evokes characteristics of Amarone itself. This offering from Domini del Leone is one of the best I've had. Robust, rich, and spicy. Pair with hard Italian cheeses and salumi. Your mouth (and your wallet) will thank you.

Astor's Glossary of Terms

The red Corvina grape (a.k.a. Corvina Veronese) is the most widely planted grape in Italy's Valpolicella and Bardolino regions. In recent years, it has gained momentum as the best grape for making Amarone.

This is a very large region that produces all sorts of red wines, often from the Corvina grape, that range from light, early-drinking, Beaujolais-esque efforts to hulking dried-grape monsters like Recioto and Amarone.
