Tasting Notes

Champagne Pierre Gerbais is a fourth generation domaine in the Aube. It is spearheaded today by the 20-something Aurélien Gerbais. The winery and all the vineyards are located in Celles sur Ource, at the confluence of four valleys carved by the rivers Seine, Arce, Laigne and Ource.

Staff Pick Notes

If you were to only look at the technical notes, this wine sounds like crunchy hippy fizz. As it is not fined or filtered, fermented with native yeasts, from vineyards free of chemicals/pesticides, and on top of it all, it’s produced by one of those young twenty somethings! If you were to only taste this wine it would seem like a grande cuvée from seasoned hands. Refreshing citrus fruits and subtle secondary fermentation notes, but what makes this bottle stand out from a lineup is its power and clarity. Two qualities prized independently yet, in my experience, not often seen hand in hand. This allows the wine to be complex but easy to enjoy. It’s difficult to convey this wine succinctly. It’s much easier to drink it and understand.

These winemakers control every...

During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking...
