Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Tasting Notes

The Coutier family has been in the village of Ambonnay since 1619, with fifth generation vigneron Antoine Coutier at the helm. While Ambonnay is thought of as Pinot Country, Coutier's nine hectares are made up of 1/3 Chardonnay which has made it into this sparkling blend (20%).

Staff Pick Notes

This is a graceful, classically styled Champagne from a small grower family in Ambonnay. Coutier is practicing organic, and fifth-generation winemaker Antoine is in the process of converting all of their vineyards to be certified. An excellent half-bottle to keep on hand for an impromptu celebration, or to elevate a weekday evening. The family marries tradition and modernity in this cuvée from estate fruit grown in one of the largest grand cru villages in Montagne de Reims. This is in the heart of Champagne. The color is a deep-hued gold in the glass. Dark berries, raw honey, and cream abound on the palate with a chalky minerality that sizzles. Delightful bubbles every time!

These winemakers control every...

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking...
