Tasting Notes

The bonded single malt rye from Coppersea is their oldest release to date, It's also one of the better whiskies of the year. With the thirst for premium American whiskey at an all time high malted rye from this distillery really delivers, and with a couple of extra years of maturation and a higher proof than the flagship, this really shows some big flavors and sophistication. The nose is dense with deep notes of ripe plums, Valencia oranges, clover honey fresh tobacco leaves, ginger snaps and green peppercorns. The flavors mirror the aromas and the whiskey is weighty and plushly textured. This whisky had us hooked immediately. An impressive effort that has us pining for older stuff.

Kentucky has its bourbon, Tennessee its whiskey, what say you New York? In 2015 six NY distilleries decided it was time to resurrect the state's image as a producer of great rye (NY before prohibition was once one of the biggest producers of rye in the US). Empire Rye is the result. The aim is to set the standards for a distinct style of the state's rye whiskies. It should have 75% New York rye and be aged a minimum of 2 years in charred oak. Coppersea is one of the founders and their rye could not get any more local. The grain is sourced locally as is the oak they use for their barrels. They're also one of those rare distilleries with their own malting floor. Their bottled in bond is aged 4 1/2 years in New York Oak. It's rich and layered with dried figs, tobacco, caramel, baking spices and toasted almonds. A New York Classic.
