Tasting Notes

A single barrel bottled exclusively for us, hand-picked from the distiller's private cellars in Melbourne. Australian whisky is on the rise but offerings will continue to be few are far between and typically coming with a hefty price-tag. Starward is shifting the paradigm and we are honored to have the first ever North American Single Cask to offer. Distilled in 2016, the malt whisky was aged for 3yrs at the distiller's cellars in Melbourne in a French Oak wine cask that previously held the legendary Penfold's Grange. Bottled at full proof. The whisky is opulent, lithe and mature beyond its years with waves of flavor arriving in equal parts from the wine, rich barley and French Oak. Notes include preserved raspberries, dates, pancake batter, butter lathered bread, cloves, licorice and treacle.

How fascinating it is to see a barrel's original contents reflected in the subsequent spirits stored inside. Case in point: This fantastic Starward exclusive bottling, aged entirely in French oak casks that once contained one of Australia's benchmark wines. There's definitely a fruit forward nose, including raspberries & dried strawberries. Don't let this put you off because there's oh, so much more in store. In fact, this is somewhat reminiscent of Armagnac, so if that spirit is your typical go-to, then this should be on your short list to try. Soft, worn leather, graham crackers and warming vanilla underpin the fruity aromas, and the palate...it's superb. I dare not give up too many details. I'd hate to ruin the delightful surprise in store when you open this bottle for yourself.
