Charbono

There are two black grape varieties that go by the name of Charbono: one grown in California and the other in Italy. Through DNA analysis, experts have determined that the California variety is identical to the Corbeau grape once grown in the French region of Savoie. The Italian variety, whose varietal wines are quite similar to Barbera, appears not to be related to Corbeau . Some ampelographers believe that Argentinian Bonarda, which is often blended with the country's beloved Malbec, is actually the Italian Charbono variety.
