Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent complement to Cabernet Sauvignon in red Italian blends; this grape duo forms the basis of many of the world-renowned SuperTuscans. The Sangiovese grape has recently been planted in Argentina and California as well, where it generally makes more modern, fruit-forward wines.
