Skinos Mastiha Liqueur

Cultivated in the Mediterranean island of Chios, this liqueur is made from the resin of the Mastiha tree. The sap is tapped and then allowed to harden. This is then distilled along with grain alcohol and then sugar is added to balance it out. The profile is gentle pine and anise and the staff at Astor think it would be amazing with almond biscotti.

Staff Pick Notes

I took this bottle to my Greek friend's Christmas party and it was a big hit. I was thrown off at first by the powerful pine aromas on the nose. After my first sip, I was hooked. It has a wonderful viscosity to it and delicate flavors of minty herbs and flowers on the palette. We chilled it in the freezer until it was ice cold then served it in shot glasses. For a faster chill, put it in a shaker with some ice, then drain. After a gluttonous Greek dinner buffet, it was the perfect reprieve.
