What's in a number? What does it mean in port years for a wine to be aged 10, 20, 40 years? If ever you doubted that wine is a living, constantly evolving thing, look only to tawny ports to see what's possible. Forty years is at the mature end of the spectrum, but it's amazing how vibrant it remains even as the color morphs to an amber brown and the flavors evolve.
The Taylor Fladgate is at the pinnacle of Tawnies. It's a pale amber color with toffee, raisin and woodsy aromas. On the palate it's lost much of its baby fat with concentrated flavors of dried figs, walnuts, burnt sugar, and a Madeira-like nuttiness. For those nights when you want to cap off the evening with something special.
