Staff Pick Notes

Armenian wine may be a newcomer to our shelves (or new to anyone outside the former Soviet Union), but winemaking in this Caucasus country dates back more than 6,000 years. In fact, in a cave near Mount Ararat, archeologists uncovered evidence of the oldest known winery in the world, including clay storage vessels called karasi. Karasi are still in use today at the Voskevaz Winery. This Areni Noir, a local variety that comes from 120-year-old vines grown at 1600 m, is fermented in clay karasi and spends 12 months in Armenian oak barrels. It's light bodied, but with a good concentration of dark fruit and a little earth and spice. The grape may be exotic but the flavors are not unlike a really good Oregon pinot noir.
