Tasting Notes

The Tihány peninsula on Lake Balaton has volcanic soils, and this is where the Kovács family has been making wine for 5 generations. Kékfrankos spontaneously ferments and is aged in used 500L Hungarian oak barrels. This is very fresh, with aromas of many berries, herbs, and a wonderful acidity that calls out for food. Pair with stewed peppers, white meat sausages, and summer tomato salad with sunflower oil.

Staff Pick Notes

Here is an engaging and distinct Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) from vineyards grown on the slope of an extinct volcano on Lake Balaton. This is the largest lake in central Europe, and the villages on all sides produce lean, flinty wines due to the layered, nutrient rich soils. "Magma" from Szent Donát is one of the brightest and most fruit-forward expressions of this grape I've ever had. It is medium bodied with refreshing acidity. The palate is redolant of tart currants, dried berries, anise, and sage. Bull's Blood may be the usual point of reference for Hungarian reds, but wines like this show you there's so much more. Hungary is making some serious reds that are elegant, balanced, and worthy of attention on the international stage.
