Sweetdram 13yr Ardmore Single Cask Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky - 2008

Item # 48543 750mL

A 19th Century Golden Era distillery, Ardmore has been a master of Highland peated whiskies for over a century. To this day a steadfast oldschool producer focused on qulaity and their distinctive style, the whisky making here is decidedly old school with very long fermentations in wooden washbacks, and a heavy sweet and smoky malt spirit. This independent bottling hails from the minds behind Sweetdram distillery in Edinburgh. Aged in a single cask ex-Bourbon cask that had held Islay single malt, the barrel was filled with Ardmore on December 5thth 2008 and bottled on September 23rd, 2022. The whisky comes to you at a natural cask strength, natural color and zero chill filtration. As the brand deftly outlines, the whisky is full flavored with tell tale notes of mesquite smoke, sweet miso glaze, burnt orange and brioche all of which blossom with the addition of some water.

Staff Pick Notes

Ardmore's style has remained iconic since its founding in 1898: a peated Highland malt that added many top notes to Adam Teacher's beloved blended Scotch. But it sees very little representation as a single malt offering. Andrew MacLeod Smith and Daniel Fisher of Sweetdram wanted to curate Scotch whisky single cask offerings to share amongst whisky geeks and lovers alike. This 13-year offering of Ardmore sees maturation in ex-bourbon and ex-Islay whiskey barrels, really bringing the medicinal aspects that Islay peat offers to the table alongside the sweet mesquite of Highland peat. Resounding notes of toasted orange peel, peanut brittle, rich brioche, sweet soy, and the interplay between peat and savory/underbush elements really make this a great pour.

Glossary

Scotch

As a synonym for Scottish, some people object to the term “Scotch” – but as far as their whisky goes, the Scottish people are required by law to classify the spirit as “Scotch whisky.”

Scotland

History:Distillation was brought to Scotland from Ireland by missionary monks in the 6th century. In 1644, the first taxes were imposed on Scottish distillers by England, with the result that most of the nation’s whisky was soon distilled illicitly. With the Parliament’s passing of the “Excise Act” in 1824, licensing fees for distilleries were much cheaper. Distilleries started to take out licenses, and since then, the distillation industry in Scotland has been continuously expanding....
