Colorful Honkaku Sweet Potato & Rice Shochu

Created at the Shoro Disitllery in Miyazaki, this special edition release combines three spirits. The first is an Indica rice shochu fermented with wild yeasts and the other two feature two different sweet potato distillates. Everything about this is different, from the types of potatoes to the color of koji used for fermentation. The first potato spirit comes from a batch made in 2017 while the most recent one was distilled in September 2020. The team at Shoro Distillery uses these elements to create a completely seamless spirit that is perfectly balanced and full of nuance. Subtle in a way only a master of the craft could achieve. One of the top shochus in class.

Staff Pick Notes

When exploring the world of Asian spirits many people hesitate when it comes to shochu. Not to be confused with soju, the usually sweet and flavored Korean beverage, shochu is a Japanese spirit that can be made with a variety of distillates. That includes what 'Colorful' is made from - sweet potato! Two different types of imo (sweet potato) are used for this bottle that is layered with fruit flavors like banana and melon as well as an earthier, baker's chocolate-y finish. It worked so well as a base for my yuzu martini! (See my staff pick on Umenoyado Yuzu for more details)
