Tasting Notes

Actually a Fernet as the base is from beets, this Amaro shows piney notes as one might expect coming from this area. As with all amari, we can't end a meal with anything else.

I miss the magic of sitting at a bar & being introduced to a new obsession. Of bartenders who have the time to geek out with you and teach you and pour tiny samples for you. I remember sitting at the tiny bar at Amor y Amargo, talking all things bitter and pointing at a bottle of the Santa Maria al Monte. It was one I'd seen around for years, but had never tasted. Soon a small pour was sitting in front of me and I can't believe it has taken me so long to get here. It smells like the back of my spice cabinet: cardamom mixed with dried mint leaves and star anise. There are strong notes of cola, bitter bark and menthol, but a citrus brightness sits on top and lingers long after the bitter components start to fade away. It is perfectly balanced between sweet and bitter and packs a slightly tannic punch. Thanks for the intro Amor!
