Tasting Notes

A delicately hued red wine from the Monferrato area of Piedmont, Italy. Made from the local Grignolino grape variety that is small in size however big on taste giving an aromatic and lively tannic profile that is addictive. Dry on the palate with aromas of pink peppercorns, red currants, and lithe tannins. The soils in this region are chalk-based, the vineyards are south and south-east facing giving ideal sun exposure throughout the growing season. The Oreste Buzio estate is the essence of artisanal with a mere few hectares of vines and family run with Andrea Buzio, winemaker, working alongside his father, brother and mother.

Grignolino (Green-yo-lee-no) is a bit of an unsung hero in Piedmont, at least in my book. It's hard to compete with grapes like Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, but what Grignolino lacks in name recognition, it makes up for in early drinkability. While you're waiting for your Barolos and Barbarescos to mature, crack open a few bottles of Grignolino, they're accessible and meant to be drunk young. This dry red is light bodied, but it's strong notes of peppercorn and red fruit with healthy tannins make it seem like a much bolder wine. The spice note goes well with many cuisines, it's a no brainer for pizza and simple pasta dishes, but I also thought it brought an interesting element to my BYO Indian dinner. Grignolino may not be a household name yet, but it should be!
