Staff Pick Notes

Fricke'n gut wein!

Eva Fricke's star has risen with startling speed. She received her oenology degree from Geisenheim University in 2001, secured the position of vineyard and operations manager at Leitz winery, then bottled wines under her name in 2006. And in the few years since then, her wines have garnered as much acclaim as any other winemaker in The Rheingau. Mellifluous Elements is a bottling from a single tank that is available only in NY/NJ. It’s seen six months of lees aging in stainless steel. It displays a rich, golden color, shows aromas of honeysuckle, apricot, and passionfruit. On the palate, it has a lush mouthfeel, and bears flavors of nectarines, plums, and tangerine. Like any good Riesling, the bright acidity gives a fresh liveliness to balance the slight sweetness. Try it and you will agree...it's Fricke'n gut wein!

Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
