It feels like 99% of growers putting Syrah on the label outside of the Northern Rhône will talk up their wine as a cool-climate, elegant style that expresses the earthy, savory side of the variety over the usual New World fruit bombs, and they are lying through their teeth. So when I find someone who is able to bring out the grape's incredible aromas of smoked and cured meats, violets, salt, and black pepper in the last place I'd ever think to look, Australia, I sit up. I take notice. And I want to sing this wine's praises from the rooftops. From sandy clay soils east of Margaret River, this is a version with body to it, and it sits balanced with excellent structure and layered complexity. It's not lacking in freshness, and will pair with classics like cassoulet or ribs braised in wine, but also Morroccan lamb or peppery french fries.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce.
