Tasting Notes

Founded in 1870, the family owned and operated Gualco Distillery in Northern Italy has been around for 4 generations and counting and widely considered one of the best in the entire country. This artisanal grappa is made from local, highly aromatic Moscato grapes that are distilled in a custom bain-marie still utilized for its slow and gentle process allowing the distillery to retain all of the delicacies of the grapes and ending with a grappa that is void of characteristic harshness. The new make is then aged for a minimum of six years in acacia casks that round out the flavors, adding gentle baking spices to the potpourri of the grapes and further integrating the alcohol for a seamless, mellow sipping digestif.

Staff Pick Notes

I will confess that I am a sucker for underdogs, and in the world of spirits, grappa might be the equivalent of the Jamaican bobsled team. For a post-prandial sip, Americans are more likely to reach for a whisky, cognac or port. But grappa? I doubt it would inflate even the tiniest of thought bubbles. But let this extraordinary muscat-based grappa make a convert of you. Gualco is a small, family-run distillery that has been operating for more than 300 years and is considered one of the best in all of Italy. One of the keys to their style is the use of a special bain marie. This low, gentle way of heating in a water bath helps retain the aromatic nuances of the grape and retains freshness, but it also allows them to remove the harsh, bitter "tail." The result is smooth and elegant, full of apricot, floral notes and utterly delicious.

With these wines, the mountain-grown Nebbiolo grapes are dried for several months in the Amarone style, yielding reds of extraordinary depth and very pronounced aromas of red flowers and crystallized red fruit. While...
