Petit Verdot, Bodega Garzón - 2019

Item # 39075 750mL

Made entirely from Petit Verdot, a variety usually used in Bordeaux for blending, this is a unique single vineyard expression of this familiar, yet hidden grape. The vines are grown with a northerly exposure on a hillside, ensuring maximum sunlight. This rich dry red is full-bodied, structured, and aged in untoasted oak for at least one year. Pair with hearty meats grilled properly over charcoal.

Staff Pick Notes

If Bordeaux blends were a band Petit Verdot would be the bass. A necessary part of the composition, but rarely given much attention. In France the season is too short for this grape to fully ripen and achieve greatness so it never stood a chance as a solo act. Until it found success abroad. Cue from stage left this pure Petit Verdot from Bodega Garzon. This wine - aged up to 18 months in French Oak- is not for the faint of heart. Surprisingly gentle aromas of violet and fresh sage belie the powerful tastes to come. And it comes on strong with big tannins, robust flavors of blackberry and dark soil and a lasting bitter chocolate finish. Decadent and full this wine requires a main course that is salty and heavy enough to handle it. Cue steak with garlic and potatoes from stage right.
