Half-Bottle of Tandaradei, Markus Prackwieser Gump - 2011

Item # 39238 375mL

Harvested in early December in a terrain filled with scree and porphyry soils stemming from volcanic activity long before we existed. It's an amazing feat that this is so affordable given the hardly there yields of 15 hl/ha. The grapes were dried on the vine and then pressed, fermented and then aged in small wooden casks for two years before bottling. Golden in color, rich in texture and an exquisite dessert wine that will keep for years to come.

Staff Pick Notes

This wine is pure luxury! It is thick and unctuous, but has a nice finish of acidity to make the perfect pairing with cheese and nuts. This wine is made in the passito style; the grapes are left to dry on the vines until December. The dry air of the northern Italian Alpine region makes this possible only in some years. In some ways this is the opposite of the most famous dessert wine, Sauternes from Bordeaux, where the humid air contributes to the noble rot of Botrytis. Even 10 years from the vintage date, this wine is still exhibiting tons of freshly dried character, with none of the savory notes you would find in a similarly aged Botrytis wine. Dried apricot, mango, and pineapple abound, with sweet honey blossoms to boot. With this beauty a little goes a long way.

Glossary

Trentino-Alto Adige

Crossing the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, Trentino-Alto-Adige is in fact comprised of two autonomous regions (Trentino and Alto-Adige). The swath of land was returned to Italy after World War I, and the two regions have been lumped together in the winemaking world ever since. Alto-Adige, the northernmost half of the region, retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. The region is most famous for its...

Alto Adige

Comprising the northern half of the oft-conjoined Trentino/Alto-Adige region of Northern Italy, Alto-Adige is in fact its own entity with its own distinct style of winemaking. Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...

Gewürztraminer

You won't likely forget your first "Gewürz," as they're some of the most distinctive and recognizable wines in the world. They are usually heavily perfumed with rich lychee and rose aromas. The variety is cultivated all over the world, but the best examples tend to come from Alsace: these are full-bodied wines with a golden color. The pink-skinned Gewürztraminer does best in cooler climates, which allow the grapes to develop good balancing acidity. This is a necessary attribute of any...
