Barbaresco, Cantina Vignaoilo Elvio Pertinace - 1997

Item # 41267 750mL

This is an accessible Barbaresco that shows the charm of an aged Nebbiolo with aromas of dried mandarin, rose petals and dried spices. This is drinking remarkably now. The winery, a coop, is located in Pertinace in Treiso, Piedmont, one of the famous villages of Barbaresco. The cooperative cellar was started in 1973.

Staff Pick Notes

Barbaresco is often seen as Barolo's little brother, and as such, the wines rarely command the steep prices of its neighbor. Good news for us: it's a source of great value. Cantina Vignaioli Elvio Pertinace was founded by Mario Pertinace in 1973 as a coop, but over the decades it's earned a reputation for producing some outstanding wines (now under the name Cantina Pertinace). The grapes for this bottling come from SSW facing slopes and undergo a 10-12 day maceration with frequent pumping over. The wine then spends 1 year in traditional Slavonian oak casks and 2 years in bottle. After 22 years it's showing only a shadow of garnet color. Mostly there's lots of ripe concentrated red fruit, a little spice & forest floor, bright acidity and lithe tannins. It has lots of good years ahead but is drinking beautifully now.

Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...
