Tasting Notes

A delicious Chenin Blanc that will please a crowd and is definitely known as a more accessible Savennières from the Closel estate. Dry yet very giving in fruit and the minerals you can feel offer great balance. The Caillardières vineyards are full of schist and sand soils and the vines are nearing 40 years in average age.

Staff Pick Notes

Evelyne DePontbriand took over Domaine du Closel from her parents in 2001. She’s led the transition to certified organic and served as the president of the Savennières AOC. With organic practice in the vineyard and a decidedly hands-off approach in the cellar, Evelyne lets the terrior and the Chenin Blanc speak for themselves. This vintage did not ferment fully dry, and is a bit like a Vouvray in temperament, with crisp acidity, honeysuckle, and orchard fruit, with a beautiful kiss of sweetness.

It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly...
