Tasting Notes

Montesecondo is the name of the estate and the original family vineyard which is located in heavier clay soils at a lower altitude in the town of Cerbaia. The grapes were hand-harvested and mostly destemmed however 30% whole cluster fruit was added to the tank before pressing and put into concrete tanks. Fermented spontaneously.

Staff Pick Notes

If you discover that there is a beautiful, sun-drenched land in Tuscany once cared for by your parents, you, like Silvio Messana might consider moving from New York to start something exciting. The original family vineyard is located in heavy clay soils at a lower-altitude in the town of Cerbaia. Messana developed a love of wine and a passion for winemaking, eventually moving to Tuscany. The first vintage that he bottled was in 2000. This 2018 vintage of Chianti Classico is a very food-friendly wine with notes of sour cherries and lots of leather and tobacco. The Sangiovese grape really shines in the glass.

Also called Canaiolo Nero, this black grape is cultivated in Italy, but not as widely as in years past. After the 19th century's phylloxera epidemic, Canaiolo vines proved difficult to graft onto healthy rootstock, so it was grown much less. Today there are still pockets of Canaiolo vineyards throughout Tuscany, and it is an allowed ingredient in Chianti - in fact, in the 18th century it was even...

Colorino

As the name suggests, Colorino is prized for the deep color it adds to wines; it's capably of providing some sturdy tannins as well. It has long been an ingredient in Chianti.

Chianti

One of the famed wine-producing regions of Tuscany. Wines of Chianti can be made from any number of Sangiovese clones, and likewise the wines span a wide spectrum of flavor and aroma profiles. Young, fresh Chianti can offer notes of raspberries and sage on the nose and an almost ephemeral palate, supported by only slightly astringent acidity. Chianti Classico Riservas, at the other end of the...

Sangiovese

Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent...

Tuscany

When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is common to most great Tuscan reds (Vernaccia is the only white wine made here). Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh...
