Jelu Syrah - 2014

Item # 14889 750mL

The Jelu winery, located in the San Juan region of Argentina, is located at an elevation of 900 feet. Jelu means sun in the native language, and these grapes do in fact achieve maximum ripeness from all the hot Argentine sun they get. Blackberry fruit, pepper, and great underlying minerality make this a tasty and crowd-pleasing wine.

Staff Pick Notes

Sometimes you just need an easy-drinking bottle of red to curl up with, and this Argentine Syrah is one of those wines. Medium bodied and balanced, it exhibits velvety dark red fruit flavors, a hint of pepper, and smooth tannins. Jelu means “sun” in the region’s native Huarpe language, and like the sun, this bottle will bring joy, life, and warmth to your world. 100 miles north of Mendoza in San Juan province, the Zonda valley gets its name from the wind that blows across it from the Pacific Ocean and through the Andes. The resulting dry wind, hot sunshine, cold nights, high elevation, and river-bed soils give this wine a nice mineral quality and a touch of smokiness. Serve this up with some barbecue, grilled game, or spicy chicken, or simply kick back and pour yourself a glass (or four) of this silky, carefree Syrah.

Founded by a group of energetic young, local winemakers, the goal was to offer winemaking consultancy services while providing technical help to their South American growers who aimed to export wine. One of the great undiscovered gems is Torrontés, a fresh, aromatic white variety that is best enjoyed young. The red Bonarda grape is another approachable yet little-known variety that thrives here. If you prefer your red wines spicy,...

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
