Founded in 1866, Best's is one of the oldest family wineries in Australia, now run by 5th generation family member Ben Thompson. This Riesling shows exuberant aromas of peach, nectarine and lime blossom. Off-dry on the palate, this is an excellent choice for herb stuffed pork or spicy papaya salad. Ageworthy, with well-structured acidity and sweetness.

When we think of Riesling, it’s easy to go straight to the great producers of Germany or Alsace. I love the Aussie expressions and recommend them as often as I can. The fun part of the wine business is learning how a variety expresses itself and how winemakers interpret the nuances. Let’s use Best’s Great Western Riesling as a case study. Shiraz is the key variety of this South Australian wine growing area, but cool-climate varieties like Riesling thrive due to the region’s mountainous elevation. Best’s stands proud as one of Australia’s longest-operating wineries, still family owned and boasting some of Australia’s oldest vines. This wine offers citrus notes, often dominant in Rieslings from down under. The acidity and hint of RS on this bottling offer an age-worthy bottle at a price that won’t break the bank, so stock up.
