Baltimore Rainwater Madeira, The Rare Wine Company Historic Series

Item # 36784 750mL

The newest addition to the Historic Series line up from the Rare Wine Company. If you thought Rainwater Madeira was watered down stuff, this bottle will change your mind. A light amber color in the glass with bright citrus flavors, delicate salinity, and plenty of viscosity. This is great to wash down almonds or mixing in cocktails. Rainwater Madeira reached the pinnacle of prestige in Baltimore. In 1902, that city's greatest Madeira connoisseur, Douglas H. Thomas, called Rainwater "the highest standard." And the absence of any Rainwaters in a 1990 New York auction prompted one merchant to speculate that "Baltimore connoisseurs thought so highly of them that they bought them all up and none reached New York."

The origins of Rainwater are murky, but the most romantic claims that a barrel destined for the American colonies was left out on a beach where it was watered down in the rain. The colonists found it delightfully refreshing, and a new style was born. In the intervening centuries Rainwater's reputation declined, but true to The Rare Wine Company's mission, they've made a version worthy of attention. Made from a blend of grapes — Verdelho , Sercial, Tinta Negra Mole — it's only slightly sweet, with a soft, silky mouthfeel and notes of roasted walnuts.

They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven style. Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most famous white wine. Literally translated as "green wine," it...
