Grown in Campania, this Fiano is an unusually full white with crisp fruit characteristics and a beautiful, dry finish. Herbs and flowers appear on the nose and are accompanied by apples and melons on the palate.
Based on the name alone, this wine promises big things. First, it promises power. Kràtos, meaning “power” in Greek, was picked as the name to grace the first wine that Luigi Maffini produced after inheriting the winery from his father in 1996. Next, it promises a sense of history. Paestum was a major ancient Greco-Roman city, which is now known for its exquisitely preserved ancient temples. So, when I sat down to taste this for the first time, I had pretty big expectations. And let me tell you, this wine delivers. It is wonderfully aromatic, full of lemon, green apple, chamomile, and white flowers. It also has undertones of tropical fruits, such as honeydew melon. On the palate, it is dry with a distinct minerality to the finish. It is thoroughly enjoyable – round but not overwhelming, fruity yet fresh.
