The first winery I ever visited – and the most beautiful – was Marqués de Riscal. If you ever find yourself in the middle of Spain, I recommend a visit to their Frank-Gehry-designed edifice. But until then, you can enjoy a glass of their introductory cuvee at home. In the glass, you’ll find that heat and leather we’ve all come to love with Rioja along with red fruit, vanilla, and tobacco. The tannins are certainly there but have been (thankfully) well-rounded by the expert hands of the winemakers at Marqués de Riscal. Overall, this is the kind of wine that pairs beautifully with a hearty meal – steak, mushrooms, lamb… anything with a good amount of iron. And while these vines grow great in the heat, I’ve always thought this wine was the most comforting on a winter’s night. Nothing warms you up quite like the taste of Spanish sun.
