Staff Pick Notes

The Oddero Family of wines in Piedmont begins it's story in the late 1800s as coopers, barrel makers. Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926, expanded the family wine to international recognition and acquired vineyards in key Barolo communes, including Brunate, Rocche di Castiglione, and Bussia Vigna Mondoca. Today, the estate is run by Giacomo's daughter, representing the families 7th generation. This Barbera d'Alba is a perfect example of their winemaking style and it comes in at a fraction of the price of their Barolo bottlings. Coming from two plots of land in Castiglione Falletto and La Morra. Outstandingly fresh, with soft and even tannins, this Barbara shows fruit notes of plum and black cherry. Black pepper and anice seed with a steely minerality this a classic expression of this Piedmont staple.

The company dedicates its full attention to the winemaking process, blending ancient wisdom...

Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive notes of strawberry, cherry, and pink peppercorn. The red Freisa is vinified in a variety of styles:...

Barbera

Barbera is grown all over Italy, but the best examples of this red grape come from Piedmont, where it is made into all manner of wines - from easy-drinking quaffers to serious, cellar-worthy bottlings. Wherever they fall on the spectrum of stodginess, however, they are generally ruby-colored, full-bodied, and highly acidic, with remarkably low levels of tannins. The areas that are most strongly associated with Barbera (for good reason) are the Alba and Asti DOCs, which consistently produce...
