Staff Pick Notes

Jean-Louis Chave is the 16th generation of his family of winemakers, going back to the 14th century. Simply put, they know this land. The steep granite slopes where the vines grow are tiered with stone terraces which must continuously be rebuilt. To me, Chave's wines are a perfect expression of Syrah in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Dark, focused fruit and minerality with gamey notes, black olive, forest floor and smoke beneath. Gripping tannins pull these elements together, giving the wine structure and potential to age. I truly look forward to this wine every year. If you are unfamiliar with the wines of Saint-Joseph, this is an ideal introduction as well as an excellent value.

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World.
