Staff Pick Notes

My wife & I were celebrating this weekend and I had a wine in my cellar that I bought back in 2009 and was desperate to try, this was the night! On the menu grilled fillet steak, roasted Spanish peppers, home made thick cut chips (fries) and green beans sauteed in a touch of garlic. So this wine from Spain's Ribera Del Duero both fermented and aged in new French Oak, the aging 22 months, had in my opinion a perfect food partner to be drunk with. The nose full of beautiful fruit encompassing cranberry, cherry and touch of vanilla. The palate an amazing black fruit with a touch of spice. Over time the palate opened further bringing licorice. This is a wonderful wine with a quality that would see it easily age 15 years no problem. Cheers Stephen W.

Glossary

Spain

Central to the Spanish winemaking philosophy is the belief that wine should be released only when it is ready to be consumed, and not a moment before. In Rioja, Navarra, and the Ribera del Duero (which have the most stringent requirements) red Crianzas must be aged a minimum of two years; Reservas, at least three...

Tempranillo

A.k.a. Cencibel. Just about synonymous with Spanish wine, the red Tempranillo grape has now fully won over the hearts and minds of critics and amateur oenophiles all over the world. Tempranillo is often used in blends with Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and has lately been grown with considerable success outside of Spain, in...

Ribera del Duero

This region is home to perhaps the most famed and acclaimed Spanish wine in history, the incomparable Vega Sicilia. Indeed for the better part of the twentieth century, Vega Sicilia was the single most expensive wine in Spain and, largely, the country’s major claim to fame on the international market. It wasn’t until 1972 that other winemakers began to creep into the region, but now the Ribera del Duero is home to a wealth of fabulous Tempranillo based wines that consistently garner critical...
