Vinha Pan, Luis Pato - 2017

750 mL
Item # 18217

A single site expression of Vinha Pan, a southeast facing vineyard on the eastern end of the property. The Vinha Pan is always the most red fruited and savory herbaceous expression of Baga from Luis Pato. What started out as a structured vintage now has more resolved tannins and elegance.

Staff Pick Notes

5 Words: Pioneer, Plums, Nonconforming, Spice, Lingering. This is 100% Baga grown on chalky-clay in Panasqueira. The Baga grape has become synonymous with the name Luis Pato. He’s fondly known as the ‘King of Bairrada.’ His father, João Pato, was the first official winegrower in the Bairrada region in the 1970s. Luis himself started making pure Baga in 1980, and it was a hit, especially with 100% Baga being somewhat rare because of its harsh tannic quality. He also produced the first Vinhas Velhas (old vines) wine in Portugal after planting un-grafted Baga vines in 1988. Using destemming and smaller French oak barrels, Luis has created a beautiful, polished style. Fun Fact: “Pato” means duck in Portuguese!
