Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses", Chandon de Briailles - 2013

Item # 20113 750mL

Always refined, this 1er cru from the "Vergelesses" vineyard is the definition of traditional Burgundy. Sensible use of older barrels preserves an earthy red cherry fruit character. There is a ripe suppleness to the palate that seems to transcend the problematic north- and west-facing slopes of Pernand-Vergelesses. This was a sumptuous vintage through all of Burgundy.

Staff Pick Notes

We had the pleasure of meeting winemaker Claude de Nicolay of Chandon de Briailles recently. Given her quiet demeanor, you might never guess that she is a force of nature in Burgundy (and beyond,) crafting elegant Pinot Noir that truly reflects the terroir of her biodynamic vineyards. In fact, she has even created her own oenological laboratory on site to explore how this terroir is best expressed. This particular cru is grown in an iron-rich clay soil, which imparts distinct earth and mineral components to balance the bright red fruit. Herbaceous notes beneath add to its complexity. The vines are less elevated on the hills of the village, providing the grapes protection from wind and over-irrigation. Pair this beauty with fowl or white meat of any kind, even in a heartier preparation.

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Fans of rich, unctuous, and well-oaked Chardonnay will enjoy Chassagne-Montrachet, whose age-worthy offerings offer all the fatness of a California wine, yet retain a very Burgundian, mineral-driven core and great acidity....
