Susucaru Rosé, Cornelissen - 2025

Frank Cornelisson has been an integral player in Sicily’s return to natural wine production. Ironically, he’s transplanted from Switzerland. Susucarus are his entry wines. The rosé is a blend of red and white grapes (Nerello, Malvasia, Moscadella, and Catarratto) that have macerated with 10 days of skin contact. He thinks of it as a light bodied red ala Jura. You’ll find a slight grip of tannins here. Yet it goes down really easy, almost like a wild berry jello. There is a touch of volcanic funk on the nose. It sits in the glass with a vibrant crimson magenta hue. The color is nice enough to bottle in untinted glass. As is the case with many natural vignerons, Cornelisson promotes biodiversity by growing olives for oil and grains for bread. Bread, oil, wine…nourishment for the land and for the soul.
