Staff Pick Notes

The 1840 Formula is a cocktail-oriented Cognac, something that might sound crazy to a lot of people. But in the days before the Phylloxera plague of the 1850s, numerous classic American whiskey cocktails, like the Julep or the Sazerac, were Cognac-based. For your next Throwback Thursday, try some of these cocktails with their original spirit. The 1840 Formula is also great in drinks that have kept the Cognac, like the sidecar, vieux carré, or my own favorite, the Japanese cocktail. If you happen to have a food processor, cheesecloth, and the time to steep some almonds in sugar syrup, make your own orgeat and experience the Japanese cocktail at home. There's a great recipe on Serious Eats.
